Using The Penelope Bag

The Penelope Bag was designed with 2 belt loops so that you can wear any belt you are comfortable with, or you can use the one provided in your care box (the belt provided can be worn on pants without belt loops, such as leggings and pjs!).

Place your Nephrostomy Bag into The Penelope Bag so that the drain spout sticks out of the bottom hole. Slip the buttons through the slits in your Nephrostomy Bag, and then through the slits on the opposite side of The Penelope Bag.

Tada! It's that easy!

Please see the Draining Tab for tips on Draining while using The Penelope Bag.

Showering

What do I do when I shower?

The most used item in my home in respect to hygiene with this bag were command hooks I bought off Amazon. I placed these hooks right outside my shower, on the side of my sink near the toilet, and on the leg of my chair at the dining room table. When I hopped in the shower, I would twist off the bag from the port, wrap a alcohol wipe around the tube, and hang it on the command hook outside my shower. This allowed me easy access to hang the bag up where I didnt have to worry about dripping post shower. After I was done showering, I took the alcohol wipe off and reattached. I didn't have to worry about cleaning it, because the alcohol wipe kept it clean for me!

Sleeping

I hope you didnt throw away the velcro strap that came with your Nephrostomy bag (but if you did, thats okay)!

I honestly found that velcroing the bag to my thigh worked best for me while sleeping. Now keep in mind, I was pregnant, so I was not sleeping in the positions I normally do. As a stomach/side sleeper, if I were not pregnant, I would have laid a hand towel down behind me, about torso level, and laid the bag on that. The tube is long enough that any tossing or turning wouldn't have put stress on the tube.

If you decide to wear the bag on your leg to sleep, be mindful of your sleep position. If you sleep on your side, put the bag on the front or back of your thigh. If you sleep on your back, i'd suggest the side of your thigh, and if you sleep on your stomach, the back of the thigh probably works best!

Draining

Not to scare you - but infections are pretty common when you have these tubes. As a precaution, I always carried a stack of alcohol wipes with me wherever I went. If I had to drain the bag, I would make sure to wipe off my hands, and the draining tip. If you do detach your tube from the port for any reason, make sure that you wipe it clean before reattaching it to your port.

The Penelope Bag is designed so that you never have to remove the bag to drain. The spout being exposed at the bottom allows you to drain anywhere you are comfortable. The less you have to touch it, the cleaner it will stay, resulting in less exposure to infection.
